Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) is a phase used to describe aircraft maintenance and repair activity. Today, the MRO organization is known to be one of the largest niches that holds numerous repair stations revolving around diverse aviation authorities around the world. The MRO organization is also known for its accomplishments, such as performing major maintenance and repair on transport category aircrafts that mostly belong to airlines and leasing companies. While both of these are important components of MRO repair and maintenance, there is also a lot more that plays into the repair station industry.
It’s important to be aware of the fact that the repair station industry goes far beyond just providing services for specific aircraft maintenance segments. MRO is rather large and covers all segments of aircraft maintenance and repair. Segments are usually divided by the following:
MRO repair and maintenance can take place at smaller repair stations that usually perform specialized procedures such as welding, plating or nondestructive testing. These services usually consist of complex processes that require specialized equipment, talent and authorizations.
These MRO repair stations provide MRO services related to specific types of components. For example, avionics and electrics, mechanical actuators or fuel systems and carburetors. Within these MRO repair stations, aircraft maintenance technicians rarely see or touch an aircraft. They work mostly behind the scenes.
Larger MRO repair stations provide MRO services mainly on large complex components, including retractable landing gear assemblies, reciprocating and turbine engines, auxiliary power units and of course, an aircraft itself.
Regardless of what segment of aircraft maintenance an aviation maintenance professional is a part of, chances are they are involved in MRO repair and maintenance.
