Amplitude modulation refers to the process of changing the properties of a wave form to transmit communication electronically. Below is an outline of the process:
Communications are sent from a radio carrier wave to other locations/devices.
Information is carried via the wave form.
The wave form is received by a device.
The information is “demodulated” to extract the information.
Differing from FM (frequency modulation), amplitude modulation is more susceptible to interference. Interference effects the wave transmission of the communication and the ability to process the information that is encoded on the wave. Amplitude modulation receives both types of interference in addition to the parent signal. Noise and electromagnetism are the main causes of interference to amplitude modulation.
Common Amplitude Modulation Applications
Many people are aware of AM for radio, but amplitude modulated waves are used by a variety of industries with multiple real-world applications. Energy companies use devices equipped with AM to gather readings from electric meters. AM waves are used for cellular telecommunications. People in these industries rely on accurate readings to determine energy usage, send digital messages, and stay connected.
Amplitude Modulation Calibration to Detect Interference
When AM devices are calibrated, calibration technicians determine how much interference is being received by the device. The technician checks if the received interference falls within the specified tolerances. There are varying to degrees to what an acceptable reading is in regard to tolerances. The next part of the amplitude modulation calibration process is to record the findings, noting any issues. If a device does not pass, it must be adjusted to meet the recommended tolerance. Labs that are accredited to work on the equipment can make immediate repairs. If the lab is not certified for amplitude modulation repairs, the technician will note which tolerance levels are unacceptable and inform the client company. The recorded tolerances are noted next to a guide of accepted standards. Calibration should occur annually to meet industry guidelines.
